Love Triumphs Over Death

Bored Panda

This is a photo of two headstones, one in the catholic cemetery, and one in the Protestant section. JWC van Gorcum was a colonel in the Dutch Cavalry and is buried in the Protestant section, while his wife, Lady JCPH van Aefferden is buried in the Catholic section. They were married in 1842, the woman being a member of the nobility and the colonel being a commoner and a protestant. After being happily married for 38 years, van Gorcum died in 1880 and was buried against the wall outside the Catholic portion of the cemetery. Eight years later his wife died, and instead of being buried in the family plot, she opted to be buried next to the wall, which was the closest she could get to being buried with her husband. Two hands connect the graves across the wall.
