This is a photo of Jackie Mitchell with Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Mitchell was a 17-year-old southpaw who pitched against the New York Yankees in 1931 and struck out both the Sultan of Swat and the Iron Horse. Babe Ruth, the baseball legend, let the first pitch go as a ball. The second pitch he missed by a foot, and the third. He then asked the umpire to inspect the ball. Finally, Mitchell’s pitch caught the outside corner of the plate, and the umpire called strike three. Ruth did not take the strikeout well, flinging his bat down in disgust and retreating to the dugout. Next up was Lou Gehrig, who swung at and missed three straight pitches.
