This is a photo of one of the first shipments of bananas ever sent to Norway back in 1905. One of the subjects in the picture, Christian Mathiessen, became the founder of Norway’s biggest fruit importer, Bama. After the United Kingdom, Norway was the second country to import bananas in Europe. The bananas pictured are Gros Michel, or Big Mike bananas, which is one of the many varieties that used to be imported around the world — however commercial interests today have made it so that the Cavendish variety is the most commonly seen, to the detriment of other heirloom variants.
