This is a photo of the seal to King Tutankhamun’s, known as King Tut, fifth shrine. He was buried in a series of four sarcophagi, or ornate coffins, which were kept inside five different shrines. The unbroken seal stayed untouched for 3,245 years by Egyptologist Howard Carter in the early 1920s. Some of the shrines had been raided before, however the body was found intact because King Tut’s tomb was directly under that of Rameses II and had gone largely unnoticed by graverobbers in antiquity. Another interesting thing about this find was the condition of the seal, which was made from simple rope. It had not disintegrated, because of the conditions in the desert which dry out and help to preserve organic material. The oldest specimens of rope in the world have been dated back to 28,000 years.
