This is a picture of Monica Seles moments after she was stabbed in back by a Steffi Graf fan in 1993. She was playing Magdalena Maleeva in the Citizen Cup, a relatively unknown event in Hamburg, Germany when a man walked up to her during a water break and stabbed a boning knife between her shoulder blades. At the time, Seles had a win-loss record of 231-25 (90.2%) and had collected 30 titles. She was the only woman who was dominating Steffi Graf on the court, while Graf was dominating all the others. The crazed fan admitted that he did not intend to kill Seles, merely injure her so Graf could once again be number one. Physically, Seles suffered only minor wounds but the emotional and mental wounds left on her scarred her for many years. She vowed never to play a match in Germany again.
