The Intrepid Men

History

The men of the USS Intrepid pictured here are participating in a time-honored tradition of burying their dead at sea. The USS Intrepid, also known as “The Fighting “I”” was one of the 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built during World War II for the US Navy, which was commissioned in August 1943. The Intrepid participated in several campaigns the Pacific Theater of Operations, most notable of which was the Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines which is considered to have been the largest naval battle of World War II. According to some military historians and scholars, the Battle of Leyte Gulf is a contender for the title of the largest naval battle in history, as over 200,000 naval personnel were involved. It was the first battle where Japanese aircraft carried out organized kamikaze attacks, and the last naval battle between battleships in history. We thank these brave men for their service.
