Binti Jua, a Western Lowland gorilla, carried a three year old boy to safety after he fell into the gorilla enclosure at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago back in 1996. Binti Jua, whose name means “daughter of sunshine”, was carrying her own 17-month baby Koola on her back when she picked up the fallen toddler and brought him back to waiting doctors and rescuers at the door of the gorilla enclosure. There were six other gorillas in the enclosure at the time, and were it not for the daughter of sunshine, things could have ended very badly for that little boy — who suffered only a broken hand and some surface scrapes and bruises.
