Kindness in Conflict

Twitter

This man may not have liked what the other man was saying, but he was tasked by his job as a police officer and enforcer of the law, to defend that man’s right to say it. This picture was taken in 1983 outside a rally in Austin, Texas where 70 Klan members came under attack from 2000 protestors. The protesters were throwing bricks and rocks at the Klansmen, and 12 people were injured, with another 11 arrested. Being an officer of the law means sometimes having to do things that hurt, but are nevertheless the right thing to do. We can only hope that the Klansman who was seeking protection was able to grow from the experience that day.
