The SwimMobile, a democrat initiative in urban centers from the 1960s onwards, was where a lot of people learned how to swim. It was a mobile swimming pool that city workers brought to various neighborhoods, and was filled with water from nearby hydrants. This is a picture of one such SwimMobile in the streets of Detroit in the 60s, a fun way for kids in the inner city to beat the heat. These SwimMobiles were so iconic for so many city-dwellers that they were even featured on an episode of The Simpsons.
