As the iconic song from the 90s goes, “you don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here”. This picture shows a man being carried home in a basket from one of the bars in Istanbul, Turkey back in the 1960s. You were only brought home in a basket when you were too drunk to stand, and the one carrying you was usually a porter who would carry furniture or other heavy things during the day. In order to still make money at night, they would carry drunk people home from bars, making sure they got all the way home and didn’t pass out in the gutters or figure in any accidents. Getting into the basket was pretty tough, as the drunk person would have to be put on a stepping stone while the porter crouched down with the basket on his back. The drunk person would then be stuffed into the lowered basket by the people in the bar.
