Electric Smile

Boredomfiles

This is a photo of French neurologist Guillaume-Benjamin-Armand Duchenne, otherwise known as Duchenne de Boulogne, who used photography to capture electrically-induced expressions on the faces of his subjects. He was known for triggering muscle contractions with electrical probes, and recording the distorted expressions with a camera. He believed that the human face was a kind of map, the feature of which could be categorized into universal rules about man’s inner state. He was also convinced that the expressions of the human face are directly linked to the souls of men.
