This photo is entitled “Homecoming Prisoner, Vienna” and it was taken by Ernst Haas in 1947. It was not uncommon after the war for soldiers to suddenly turn up in their hometowns, after months of radio silence, to find their families and loved ones. The photographer, Haas, was an Austrian-American photojournalist who is said to have bridged the gap between photojournalism and photography as a medium of art. Haas captured these and more powerful scenes in the aftermath of World War II over the span of three years. We can only imagine what it must have been like for those returning home to their families and a different world after the ravages of war.
