Much like Sears, the parent company of both brands TransformCo planned on closing 45 Kmart stores last February. In the last 15 years, both Sears and Kmart have had to close more than 3,500 stores, while cutting around 250,000 jobs. Though the number is unclear, there are only about 30 to 40 Kmart stores that remain open. During the Coronavirus lockdown, Kmart remained open as an essential retailer although the discounter’s shelves were empty in some places.
