43. Protect Your Pipe Ends from Corrosion

Faucets, sprinkler heads and other metal fittings that are constantly exposed to moisture and water should be protected from corrosion and rust. Minerals from water, such as calcium, build-up on their surfaces and slowly destroy them. Replacing damaged pipe ends can be time-consuming, not to mention, costly.
Water also causes rust and corrosion which can damage fittings. Rust forms when iron comes into contact with oxygen found in air and water. When this happens, iron oxide is formed, weakening the integrity of the metal. Given enough time, anything that has iron in it, will eventually turn into rust and fall apart.
To prevent this from happening, spray metal pipe ends and sprinkler heads with WD-40 to help prevent residual water from damaging them.
