Seashells make beautiful decorations on desktops and nightstands, especially if they retain their natural beauty. These beautiful trinkets help remind us of beautiful memories spent vacationing on the beach. Unfortunately, these souvenirs lose their shine and go brittle over time. 
Sea shells are mostly made of calcium carbonate, which is by nature brittle, especially when dry. Their structures are made rigid by proteins, which act like the steel mesh-like network we see inside concrete posts. When submerged, these shells retain moisture, making them strong, but when taken out of the water, they become powdery and brittle, just like chalk.
 Luckily, you can give them a quick polish with some WD-40 to bring back their original beauty. WD-40 works its way into the tiny pores found on seashells. It provides the needed moisture to keep them from going brittle, and the same time, makes them shinier.
