The Subaru BRAT Was Just Too Weird For Its Own Good

Wikipedia

A car trying to pass for a compact truck…a sheep in wolf’s clothing. The 1978 Subaru BRAT is an example of a glorified car. Subaru may have been known for their cars, but the truck category was definitely not their specialty. They tried to turn a car into a truck, adding a flatbed to the back of a sedan body. Seems like they did not learn from the Ford Ranchero experience. However, the BRAT stayed in production for 16 years. And luckily for them, president Ronald Reagan owned a 1978 model for 20 years. It served as a tacit endorsement and increased the market value of the car (not truck).
