Lyndon B. Johnson (140)

Britannica

LBJ was the 36th President who assumed the position after the JFK assassination. He became a Senator in 1948, and was unsuccessful in the 1960 nomination for the presidential election where he accepted Kennedy’s invitation to be his running mate. Upon succeeding JFK, his “War on Poverty” helped millions of Americans rise above the poverty line. Unfortunately, his popularity diminished when he escalated American involvement in the Vietnam War. Johnson began his presidency with widespread approval. But support for him rapidly declined due to the public becoming frustrated with the war and the growing violence at home. He left office in 1969.
