Wikipedia

James Earl “Jimmy” Carter Jr., became the 39th President and served from 1977 to 1981. He grew up as a peanut farmer in rural Georgia, before becoming a two-term Georgia Senator from 1963 to 1967, and Governor from 1971 to 1975. He beat incumbent president Gerald Ford in a very close election. On his second day in office, President Carter pardoned all Vietnam War draft evaders. He lost popularity mainly due to the Iran hostage crisis, the 1979 energy crisis, and the Three Mile Island nuclear accident.
