Another Harvard graduate, John Quincy Adams served as the 6th President, and the top in terms of IQ rank. He spoke 7 languages fluently, and studied around the globe. Known as “Old Man Eloquent” because of his superb oratorical skills, he is best remembered by historians as the President who negotiated the end of the War of 1812. Adams spent much of his youth in Europe, where his father served as a diplomat. In 1794, President Washington appointed Adams as the US ambassador to the Netherlands. President Madison in 1809 appointed Adams as US ambassador to Russia. In 1825, John Quincy Adams took his oath of office on a book of constitutional law instead of the traditional Bible. He is the only President to have kept an alligator as a pet.
