Wikipedia

Zachary Taylor was the 12th President and served from March 1849 until his death in July 1850. Barely 16 months in office he perished due to a stomach related illness. He was a career military officer in the US army rising to the rank of Major General. Victory in the Mexican-American War made him a national hero which won him the election to the White House. Unfortunately, he died before making any progress on the issue of slavery, which had been sowing tensions in Congress. After his death, Vice-President Fillmore assumed the presidency and completed Taylor’s term.
