He was also knowledgeable in architecture and mechanics. He founded the University of Virginia upon retiring from the presidency. As President, he pursued the nation’s shipping and trade interests, amidst pirates and aggressive British trade policies. He also organized the Louisiana Purchase from France, which almost doubled the country’s territory.
