Hoover was the 31st President of the US and was raised as a Quaker. During WWI, he served as the head of the US Food Administration, and garnered international popularity for humanitarian relief efforts in Belgium. He held office (1929-1933) on the onset of the Great Depression where the US Stock Market crashed, beginning a decade of poverty, high unemployment, and plunging farm incomes to name a few setbacks.
