President Johnson was the 17th president after Lincoln’s assassination. Historians consider him to be one of the worst US presidents ever. Controversy was sparked by his decision to quickly restore the seceded states to the Union, and not giving protection to former slaves. He came into conflict with the Republican-dominated Congress, and was impeached by the House of Representatives. However, he was acquitted in the Senate by just one vote. His recognized accomplishment is the Alaska purchase from the Russian empire in 1867.
