Dwight D. Eisenhower (132)

Defense

“Ike” served as the 34th President. He was a five star General during WWII and was the Supreme Commander of the Allied forces in Europe. Since graduating from Westpoint in 1915, he became a career military officer. Eisenhower became President in 1953, and threatened to use nuclear weapons if China did not agree to peace terms in the Korean War. He continued Truman’s policy of recognizing the Republic of China as the legitimate government of China, and won congressional approval of the Formosa Resolution. This bill in 1955 established America’s commitment to defend Formosa (now called Taiwan) against invasion by the People’s Republic of China.
