He served as the 20th President of the United States until his death by assassination six and a half months later. He never actually sought the Presidency, but was chosen as a compromise presidential candidate at the 1880 Republican Convention. His accomplishments in office were appointing a US Supreme Court Justice, and combating corruption in the Post Office. He advocated agricultural technology, and civil rights for African Americans. If he was not killed early into his term, who knows what other great things he could have achieved.
