The 15th President from 1857 to 1861. He is the only President to have remained a bachelor. A Northerner with Southern sympathies, he brought the nation to the brink of civil war. Considered to be one of the worst US Presidents by scholars and historians. Two months after his retirement, the Civil War erupted under his successor Abraham Lincoln. Buchanan spent most of his remaining years defending his actions leading to the Civil War. He received angry and threatening letters daily, some with his likeness portrayed with a noose around his neck and “TRAITOR” spelled across his forehead.
