The 25th President of the US and the last President to have served in the Civil War, and the only one to have started as an enlisted soldier. He led the nation into the Spanish-American War of 1898 and won it quickly and decisively. Spain turned over its main colonies in the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam as part of the peace settlement. Rapid economic growth marked McKinley’s presidency. His legacy was cut short when an anarchist assassinated him six months into his second term. He was succeeded by Vice-President Theodore Roosevelt.
