What looks like a bunch of men sitting under a beautiful star-lit night is actually a bunch of men under a tent with hundreds of holes in it. These American soldiers had been under a German artillery attack, and their tent got the brunt of the assault it seems. Despite the gaps and holes created by the bullets and shrapnel from the onslaught, the tent still managed to remain intact, which meant that they could still use it for some sort of shelter through the night.
