During the war, there was nowhere to run. It was either you were on the battlefield or on the sidelines as you tried to get some rest in between battles. These two soldiers were photographed simply sitting around while taking a smoke break. Sitting in the middle of rubble and dust, they were probably just hanging out while waiting to see if they were about to get attacked. From the looks of it, they’d been duty for months, if not years already. Their faces show the seasoned expressions of men no longer fazed by the ugliness of war.
