The war between the Japanese and the Americans was incredibly hostile. The Japanese were told that the American soldiers were all murderers and rapists, so it was better to commit suicide – which the Japanese called Seppuku, or more popularly Harakiri. In fact, the Japanese emperor at that time had ordered all the Japanese citizens to commit Harakiri rather than get captured. But this photograph actually shows an American solider helping a Japanese woman and her baby come out of their hiding place, although the fear on her face is palpable.
