The Only Survivor

Horizon Times

Like most wars that have occurred in the world, women and children tend to suffer the most since they are often left alone and defenseless. For one little boy, Roger Godfrin, he happened to be the sole survivor of a horrendous massacre that took that lives of 643 French citizens by Nazi troops. After locking the victims in a church, the troops set it on fire and left them all to perish. Roger, who happened to be almost eight years old at the time, saw what was happening from a far and managed to run away to a river. He eventually became an Air Force cadet, honored for his service when he was older. When asked about that awful day and how he survived, he said, “Just fate, I did like the others did. Cleverer ones died in it. It’s just destiny, nothing heroic at all.”
