Vice President Lyndon Baines Johnson, often called LBJ, was sworn in as the 36th President of the United States when JFK was assassinated. He was a skillful politician with a domineering personality and intimidating tactics of persuasion known as “The Johnson Treatment.” He was born in a farmhouse in Central Texas to parents facing financial difficulties. His father lost all their money to cotton speculation, and LBJ had to work various jobs to complete his education. Before he entered politics, he taught Mexican American children at Welhausen School in Cotulla then at Sam Houston High School in Houston. Over time and with much ambition and hard work, LBJ acquired 1,500 acres of land in Blanco County, Texas, including the 142-acre ranch called the “Texas White House.” His wife, Claudia Alta “Lady Bird” Johnson, the daughter of a wealthy businessman and a socialite, was a competent manager and successful investor. LBJ and his wife bought radio and television stations in Austin, and various moderate holdings, that generated significant revenues.
