The Founding Father who served as the second president of the United States, John Adams, wasn’t nearly as affluent as his predecessor, George Washington, but he and his wife, Abigail Smith, both came from prominent families. His wife, particularly, is a descendant of the Quincys, the most prestigious political family in Massachusetts. Aside from receiving an inheritance from his father, Adams also owned a 40-acre estate, a working farm he called Peacefield, in Quincy, Massachusetts. Moreover, Adams made money from the years he was in office, as a delegate to the Continental Congress to his diplomatic service as commissioner to France and ambassador to the Dutch Republic as well as to Great Britain, to his vice presidency, and ultimately, his presidency in 1797. Adams was also a political activist and had a thriving law practice prior to the revolution.
