Years in Office: 1897 to 1901
Political Party: Republican
President No. 25

Unlike a number of presidents on this list, William McKinley Jr. did not inherit a significant sum of money from his family. Instead, the seventh of nine children born in Niles, Ohia worked as a postal clerk and a teacher to help his family when their finances declined. McKinley served in the American Civil War before he settled in Canton, Ohio. He then generated his income working various public service positions for three decades, starting as a local prosecutor before rising in politics and becoming the 25th president of the United States. McKinley went bankrupt during the Great Depression in 1893 while he was governor of Ohio, but he brought about rapid economic growth at the start of his presidency. He also led and won the Spanish-American War that freed four territories from the colonization of Spain and annexed the independent Republic of Hawaii. Sadly, his legacy was cut short when an anarchist shot him just six months into his second term.
