Before Zachary Taylor became an army major general, a national hero, and a U.S. president, he was already a wealthy man. He was born into a prominent family of plantation owners, and he inherited a lot of land from his parents, including properties in Kentucky, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Taylor earned from his plantation farm in Mississippi and made more money in stocks and bank investments, land speculation, and leasing of properties. Despite being financially set, he chose a career in the military, enlisted in the War of 1812, fought in the Black Hawk War and Second Seminole War, and became a hero during the Mexican War. He was a reluctant presidential nominee, but he won the election despite his lack of political experience. As president, he kept his distance from Congress and his cabinet, avoided the issue of slavery and did not push for its expansion, but instead sought for sectional harmony until his death from cholera sixteen months into his term.
