The statesman, diplomat, lawyer, diarist, and sixth president of the United States, John Quincy Adams, is the son of former president John Adams. He was well educated, having studied in Amsterdam, Paris, and the Hague and earning a master’s degree from Harvard, but he became a lawyer without ever attending law school. Instead, he completed his legal education apprenticing to the famous American jurist Theophilus Parsons. Quincy Adams inherited the Peacefield estate from his father, as well as John Adams’ temperament and political standpoints, but he made most of his fortune from his hard work as a lawyer and a public servant. Though Quincy Adams had initially avoided politics, wanting to focus on his legal career, he followed his father’s advice and accepted his appointed role of ambassador to the Netherlands. From there, he served high-ranking diplomatic posts, was elected to the United States Senate, was appointed as Secretary of State then elected president of the United States.
