James Buchanan Jr. was born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania to a father who was a businessman, farmer, and merchant and a mother who was an educated woman. He’s the only U.S. president to never marry. Considering he came from a prosperous family, was well-educated, became a successful lawyer with his own practice, earning over $11,000 annually (equal to $210,000 in 2019), and remained a bachelor, never having to provide for a wife and children, one would think he should have more money to his name. However, Buchanan started early in politics and spent his entire career in public service. After getting a degree in law, he enlisted as a private in the military, served in the War of 1812, returned home and was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He became a congressman, senator, secretary of state, ambassador to the United Kingdom, and was elected as the 15th president of the United States.
