The five-star army general Dwight David “Ike” Eisenhower served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe. Despite spending most of his life in the military, he never saw a day of active combat since he served at various training camps across the country. He gained a reputation as an excellent writer, composing letters, reports, and speeches for top brass, including General Douglas MacArthur. Newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst offered to triple his existing pay if he would leave the army and work for him as a military correspondent, but Eisenhower declined the offer. Instead, he worked his way up the ranks, was elected the 34th president of the United States, contained the spread of communism, and reduced federal deficits. He was also the 13th president of Columbia University before he became the first supreme commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). He accumulated his wealth from decades of public service, and he also owned a farm near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
