Net Worth: $2 Million
Years in Office: 1853 to 1857
Political Party: Democratic
President No. 14
Born 1804 (Lived 64 Years)
At the time he was elected president of the United States, Franklin Pierce at age 47 was the youngest man to assume office. He started in politics early and was only 24 years old when he won the election to the New Hampshire state legislature. His father, Benjamin, was a lieutenant in the American Revolutionary War before he became governor of New Hampshire while his mother, Anna Kendrick, suffered from depression and alcoholism. Unfortunately, despite an early start and bright future in politics, Pierce inherited his mother’s bouts of alcoholism and was often mocked as the “Hero of Many a Well-Fought Bottle.” He did not support anti-slavery groups, but he signed the Kansas–Nebraska Act and enforced the Fugitive Slave Act. His administration was full of political strife, and his family life was even grimmer with all his three sons dying in childhood and his wife never recovering from grief.
