Chester Alan Arthur was born in Fairfield, Vermont, the fifth of nine children, to parents of English, Welsh, and Scots-Irish descent. Arthur studied at Schenectady’s Union College and taught during winter breaks. He later taught full-time at Schaghticoke to cover his expenses while he pursued an education in law. Arthur became a school principal in Cohoes, New York, saved enough money to relocate to New York City, was admitted to the New York bar, and joined Culver’s firm which was afterward renamed Culver, Parker, and Arthur. He served the New York Militia during the American Civil War and returned to law after. His practice, political prospects, and finances improved when President Grant appointed him as customs collector for the Port of New York, a lucrative and politically powerful post. Only months after Arthur was elected as vice president, President James A. Garfield was shot, and Arthur assumed presidency.
