James Earl Carter Jr. was born at the Wise Sanitarium in Plains, Georgia. His family moved several times until they settled near Archery in a community almost entirely occupied by impoverished African American families. Despite the effects of the Great Depression, Carter’s family benefited from farming subsidies, and he was sent to school, making him the first person on his father’s side of the family to graduate from high school. He also fulfilled his dream of joining the U.S. Navy, but he had to give up his military career to save his family’s peanut farm after his father died. He hoped to expand the business, but he struggled to transition from sailor to agribusinessman. His first harvest failed because of drought, and he had to make several loans from banks just to keep the farm. Eventually, he and his wife, Rosalyn, recovered, grew the business, and became successful. He also made money post-presidency writing books, and he won the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for his work as president.
