Neither Millard Fillmore nor his first wife, Abigail Powers, came from wealthy families. Fillmore was born in a log cabin on a farm in the Finger Lakes region of New York where his family endured severe poverty during his formative years, and his future wife was also raised with meager funds. Fillmore rose from poverty through hard work. He spent his youth planting crops on the farm before apprenticed to a cloth dresser then textile owners. Despite having little formal schooling, he studied diligently, became a successful lawyer, co-founded the University of Buffalo, and served as its first chancellor. He got involved in politics when he was elected to the New York state legislature, continued on the political path until he assumed office in 1850 following the death of President Taylor. His first love, Abigail, passed away from pneumonia less than a month after he left the White House. In 1858, he married a wealthy widow, Caroline McIntosh, and they bought a house and devoted themselves to philanthropy.
