James Abram Garfield served from March 4, 1881 until his death by assassination only six and a half months later. He was born in a log cabin in Orange Township, Ohio, the youngest of five children. Since his father died when he was only eighteen months old, he and his siblings had to help their mother at the farm to make ends meet. He was often bullied because he was poor and fatherless, so he escaped through reading, left home at age 16, and found work on a canal boat. He worked as a teacher and a carpenter’s assistant to support himself while he attended Geauga Academy then enrolled at Williams College in Massachusetts from where he graduated as salutatorian. His return to Ohio with a degree from a prestigious school made him a man of distinction. Garfield showed competence and integrity when he became president, but his administration was cut short when Charles J. Guiteau shot him in the back.
