First off, he was born Leslie Lynch King Jr. to parents, Leslie Lynch King and Dorothy Ayer, who divorced because his biological father had a history of domestic violence. Dorothy met and married Gerald Rudolph Ford, a local paint salesman, and the younger Ford grew close to his stepfather. After serving in the U.S. Naval Reserve, Ford began his political career as the U.S. representative from Michigan’s 5th congressional district, and he rose through the ranks as the House Minority Leader. Ford is the only person appointed as vice president and president without being elected to either office, following the resignation of Vice President Spiro Agnew and the subsequent resignation of President Richard Nixon.
