The seventh president of the United States, Andrew Jackson, acquired his wealth from many years in the military and in public service. He earned the name “Old Hickory” because of his toughness as a commander leading an army. Aside from his military, legal, and political career, Jackson made a fortune as a merchant, planter, and slave owner. He built the first general store in Gallatin, Tennessee and bought the Hermitage, a 640-acre cotton plantation in Davidson County that he expanded to 1,050 acres. Jackson also owned slaves, starting with nine and later owning over 300 slaves throughout his life. He also married into wealth, falling in love with a then unhappily married Rachel Donelson Robards. Unfortunately, they married before she had been legally divorced from her first husband, and this was used against Jackson in the 1828 presidential campaign. His wife was accused of adultery, she died just weeks after Jackson’s election, and the grieving president believed her deep anguish over the slander caused her death.
