The Founding Father and proponent of democracy, republicanism, and individual rights, Thomas Jefferson, is most known for writing the Declaration of Independence. He was born in Shadwell, Virginia to Jane Rudolph and Peter Jefferson, a planter and land surveyor. His father left him with 5,000 acres of property, including the plantation Monticello which was tended to by dozens of slaves. He also made a significant amount of money in politics, serving as Virginia’s state legislator and governor, a member of Congress, minister to France, secretary of state, and president. Furthermore, he had the largest collection of books, amassing three libraries in his lifetime, and he sold his second library to the government after the Library of Congress was raided and burned by the British during the War of 1812. When he retired from public office, Jefferson founded and built the University of Virginia.
