The American statesman, politician, and conservationist, Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt Jr., is the youngest president in the history of the United States, sworn into office at age 42. He was born to a wealthy and prominent family in Manhattan, New York City. His mother was a socialite and his father was a businessman and philanthropist who also happened to be an active leader in New York’s cultural affairs. Roosevelt was given a significant trust fund, but he lost most of his fortune on a ranching venture in the Dakotas where he retreated to grieve when his wife, Alice Hathaway, and his mother died in quick succession. In order to pay his bills, he had to work as an author. Fortunately, he was a prolific writer, and he rebuilt his fortune writing numerous letters, speeches, articles and almost 50 books, including an autobiography. He also made money from years in public service, and like other wealthy presidents, he had a 235-acre estate on prime land called Sagamore Hill.
