President No. 17

Andrew Johnson assumed presidency after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. He was born in Raleigh, North Carolina to illiterate parents who worked as tavern servants, grew up in poverty, and never attended school. Instead of going to school, he apprenticed as a tailor, but he taught himself the basics of reading. Johnson didn’t receive any formal education until he married the daughter of a shoemaker, Eliza McCardle, who supported his endeavors, helped him improve his writing, and taught him the fundaments of mathematics. Equipped with new skills, he advocated for the common man, rallied against plantations, gained the support of the Greeneville, Tennessee community, and eventually became the town mayor. He climbed the political ladder and became a United States representative, governor, senator, vice president, and president. He bought Alaska from Russia despite the ridicule of political observers, but he also faced the consequences of impeachment. Post-presidency, Johnson again served in the Senate and remains the only former president to do so.
