Rutherford Birchard Hayes may have come from humble beginnings, born in Delaware, Ohio to a storekeeper and his wife, but he worked his way up and made his millions as a lawyer and a public servant for decades. Even though his father had died weeks before his birth, his mother took care of the family and made sure he got an education. Hayes attended public schools in Delaware and graduated as valedictorian from Kenyon College in Gambier. Afterward, he graduated from Harvard Law School and opened his law office, first in Lower Sandusky then in Cincinnati. Even though many of the earlier presidents were established lawyers, Hayes was the first to actually graduate from law school. Hayes was made president in one of the most contentious and hostile elections in history. After his presidency, he became an advocate for educational charities, believing education was the best way to raise the society and enable Americans to respond to opportunities.
