The American politician and lawyer, Benjamin Harrison, and his wife, Caroline Scott, also did not come from wealthy backgrounds. Even though he came from a distinguished family, being the grandson of U.S. President William Henry Harrison and the great-grandson of one of the country’s founding fathers Benjamin Harrison V, his family had modest resources. Harrison attended Farmer’s College where he met his wife, studied law, graduated, and established his own practice. He joined the Republican Party soon after it was formed, enlisted as an officer in the Union Army and rose to the rank of brigadier general, then resumed his political career after the war.
